Home Team Report: As 6 - 0 home defeats go, this was actually a very enjoyable evening played in a friendly spirit.
None of us is under any illusion about the challenge ahead of us this season. We're simply taking everything frame-by-frame.
After a cautious start to the opener, George moved into a 31 point lead with one red remaining. The frame swung decisively in his favour when Andy played a good safety but watched helplessly as the red flicked another ball and came to rest invitingly over the green pocket for George. He cleared to the blue and SSA were on their way. Incidentally, this is their first season playing from the Academy, having moved from Woking Snooker Centre.
Andy looked solid throughout the second frame and was 25 ahead with two reds remaining and both the brown and black on side cushions. However, he didn't get a clear chance to get over the line. George potted both reds and later the aforementioned brown. The black with the rest was a particularly fine shot.
James was more secure in the balls in an open frame against Kelvin as SSA moved into a 3 - 0 lead.
It might be surprising to read that - given the players on show and our generous West Byfleet table - there weren't any notable breaks during the match. In every frame, there was a sense that people might just be one pot away from building something. This was evident in James's frame against Chris, which ended in almost a carbon copy of the opener. 35 behind on the last red, Chris played a safety but - just like Andy - watched as the red flicked another ball and landed right over the green pocket.
Paul held a slender lead against Chris and snookered him on the final red. Although Chris got out of it, he stuck the red up and Paul cleared to the pink, including an excellent long brown to hold position for the blue.
The newly-adopted "Cuestars" foul-and-a-miss rule came into play in my frame against Paul, which swung either way until he won on the blue. We'd had a bizarre series of snookers generated by flukes, followed by narrow misses or balls being hit and then leading to another snooker. Paul generously called a miss on himself a couple of times, which epitomised the spirit of the night I mentioned at the start of the report.
