Away Team Report:
Lewis made an exquisite break of 88 as our ‘A’ team rivals secured a comprehensive and vital win in their quest for the title.

After a cagey start against Chris, breaks of 24 and 38 in frame three provided a taste of what Lewis would subsequently deliver. The 38 was only thwarted by snookering himself on the last red with a clearance on.
He was starting to play with real panache and – with his team now 3-0 up – Lewis moved into top gear in frame four. A superb run of 88 began with an excellent red, cut into the middle. Lewis barely lost position throughout as he gave a masterclass in break-building. The last four reds were blocking each around the pink spot and it looked for a moment as though nothing was on. Lewis had other ideas and played an audacious shot to smash one of them into the green pocket and still leave himself perfect position on a colour. A century now looked almost certain, but unfortunately the penultimate red eluded him and the break finished on 88: the second highest in the Prem this season and Lewis’s best in the league since he made a 127 three years ago. In this kind of form, he makes the game look so easy and it was a pleasure to watch.

The ‘A’ side were already 2-0 ahead before Lewis got to the table. Breaks of 28 and 26 gave George the opener against Andy. The second frame was tighter and indeed quite peculiar in parts, with the last six reds gathered in baulk and many covered by colours. George navigated his way through the traffic and cleared yellow to brown for the win.

Paul set off well against me in frame five and was more than 25 ahead before I replied with my own break of 25. Matters were then pretty even and I had first shot at a long pink. My attempt at the pot missed by quite some distance and Paul took full advantage. His positional shot from pink to black was inch-perfect. The last frame was more scrappy and I held the advantage throughout. Paul was unlucky to follow the yellow in-off when it was sitting right over its own pocket and he had to play from distance from the opposite cushion. I subsequently took the re-spotted yellow and green (it was in a similar position to the disastrous brown I attempted the previous week against Sunbury) and we had our consolation frame.

The ‘A’ team march on in their quest for the Premier League title and we wish them all the best. They certainly have the ability, it’s now just a matter of nerve. The key fixture coming up is the table-topper against champions Windlesham. Meanwhile, this defeat puts us on the brink of mathematical relegation. We’ve been under no illusions about the reality of our situation this season but have been enjoying the challenge every week.

Merry Christmas to all players across the Byfleet League.
