Home Team Report:
A most enjoyable evening with the West Byfleet lads, as it always is especially with Dave ”the Entertainer” Wood. There were laughs all evening right up to the end when their taxi turned up 20 minutes early and they missed the food. Thanks lads, the sausages and spuds were great! Excellent performances from both Steve and Lol this evening, probably their best of the season. It was a lively opener with Steve holding the upper hand throughout most of the frame, though never really dominating. Both players scored well and frequently without ever getting any real opportunities to make substantial breaks. This kept the score tight but a superb break of 13 towards the end from a “nothing leave” made the winning difference. In frame 2 Lol again cued very well throughout his match with only a small stutter in the 90’s. He quickly established a 50+ point lead with several good breaks in the teens and just as Mick was beginning to make a determined comeback, Lol’s excellent break of 27 enabled him to run out a convincing and comfortable winner. A well deserved win with Lol being unlucky not to post 2 or 3 “high breaks”
I now want to draw a veil over the final frame as it really was unbelievable. You had to be there. With no disrespect to Martin, thanks to Steve and Lol’s excellent victories, New Haw were seemingly set up for our 3rd 10 pointer of the season. However, Lady Luck intervened to create an upset and spoil the party. Protocol prevents me from giving a full report on this frame but in 27 years of playing billiards in the Byfleet league I have never ever witnessed anything like it. Under the circumstances I suppose I have to take pride in the fact that I managed to get that close to Martin, but it doesn’t sweeten the pill! I just hope Martin took my advice and bought a lottery ticket on the way home! ha ha. This was a missed opportunity for New Haw to get a point back on Staines, which after last weeks unfortunate reverse against Oatlands and with the return of Andy Allen to strengthen the Staines cause means the bird may now have flown.
